#9 Today I learned...

2/4/12 -  Today I learned that an iron nail stuck through a potato helps it bake twice as fast.

I always learn something new when I go visit my Grandma. She lives alone in a small house in Indiana, coincidentally right next to my coworker with whom I enjoy a ride every now and again. It was her birthday, so I decided it was time for my monthly visit to celebrate with her.

Grandma is a great cook, as are most grandmas, and she is a thrifty one, too. Growing up on a farm, she never had much money, but she did make the most of what she had. Each visit, I learn something new about life on "the farm", as she lovingly calls it.

This time, she told me about how, the other day, a man stopped her in the supermarket and questioned her as to why she is sniffing the potatoes. I smiled at the idea - my little old grandma, sniffing potatoes for an extended period of time in her quest for the best. She has been commenting often recently about the poor quality of potatoes in the store in the past year. Most of us probably wouldn't notice.

Anyhow, after this man interrupted her sniffing with his questions, she then regaled how to know a rotten potato from a good one. She then segwayed into life on "the farm" (I am unsure if she also told this to the man, but I wouldn't put it past her),  and how they saved potatoes through the winter because prices were better in the spring. They would dig a hole in the earth, push straw down over the dirt, throw in the potatoes, another layer of straw, and then cover the whole thing with dirt. If you were lucky enough to have a basement, you could just store them in there, but most people were not so lucky. I love to listen; there's something romantic in the way she describes life back then. Little-House-on-the-Prairie-esque.

Anyhow, metal nails are heal conductors, so, when placed in the potato when baking, it cooks it from the inside out. A great trick that comes in a pack of 4!

#8 Today I learned...

2/3/12 Today I learned that insider trading is legal for government employees.

They have all the inside info, knowing important laws and decisions before they are made public. Officials can be bribed by corporations to spill the beans, giving the companies time to make their move and benefit financially.

Obama mentioned in brief that he was going to put a stop to it during his most recent State of the Union adresss. We'll see...gotta love America!

#7 Today I learned...

2/2/12 - Today I learned how to make cake pops.

This is a ton of fun! It's time consuming, but, combining the work with good friends makes the night a memorable one. I had three friends over to help me, and it was a blast!

Cake pops are relatively simple. I baked a box white cake, and crumbled it when it cooled. After adding store bought frosting, I molded the cake into balls and stuck the frosting-covered tips of lollipop sticks into the center. Making shapes other than balls is rather difficult, footballs being no exception!

After freezing them to solidify the shape, the dipping began. I had dark chocolate for the footballs, and white chocolate for the rest. We added sprinkles and details, laughing and enjoying each other's company while doing so. A great night... and the cake pops were delicious!

Chinese New Year!

I can't believe it's been 3 years since I was in China. It feels like just yesterday I was there; Yet, I also feel al huge disconnect from the person I was, and the person I am today. Its amazing how much you experience and mature in 3 years.

To celebrate, I taught a few lesson at school about China, or Chinese, and had some pretty interesting discussions with my students. It was very difficult for them, as well as most adult Americans, for them to wrap their heads around how different our cultures are. Though these discussions, I hope to not only instill a sense of curiosity to fuel a desire to pursue a higher education or international travel, but also to promote a awareness and appreciation for a culture that is so different from out own.

Where else to go to celebrate this holiday but to Chinatown? I enjoyed a great evening with friends, with great food. I even found baozi, my favorite chinese food! I bought a pack of 6... and will definitely be back soon to stock up.

I also found something that brought me back to another place entirely - Cusco, Peru! Cheers to Inca Cola!
